El Dorado Fire and Rescue Service participated in the annual National Night Out on August 3, 2010. EFRS sent two Engines and 5 people to the Santa Fe Plaza. Children and adults alike were able check out fire equipment and get inside the cabs of Engine 731 and Tower 1. El Dorado shared the Plaza with representatives from law enforcement and the Sana Fe Fire Department. The goal of National Night Out is to promote a partnership between the community and fire and police. It was clear that everyone had a good time.

Members of the El Dorado Fire and Rescue Service assisted Hondo Volunter Fire Department in putting down a wildland fire just off of Old Las Vegas Highway on June 7, 2010. The fire was confined to a few acres but quick action by the two departments prevented it from becoming a major fire.

Eldorado Fire and Rescue members, along with volunteers from Hondo, Glorietta, and Galisteo, completed 24 hours of Extrication Training May 13-16, 2010. Extrication is the process of removing an entrapped patient from a wrecked car. During the weekend training, trainees cut up 10 vehicles as they practiced Extrication skills. El Dorado Fire and Rescue Service provided 3 people , an Engine, and a water tender in helping the Glorieta VFD knock down a fire in a trailer home in the afternoon of April 1, 2010. The home was in a non-hydranted area so water had to be shuttled in from 3 miles away.The home was a total loss. When structure fires occur in the Eastern region of Santa Fe County, the four fire districts (Eldorado, Hondo, Glorieta, and Galisteo) provide assistance to each other.

EFRS Firefighters and Medical staff train regularly so they will be ready when called upon. Training occurs every Wednesday night and Saturday morning. In the following photographs, Firefighters are training at night to use a Monitor. A Monitor is a standalone device used to provide and continuous stream of water to a building that is on fire, or to the exposed faces of nearby buildings to keep them from igniting.

Single car Motor Vehicle Accident on 285 - Click this title to see more

EFRS and M80 personnel provided traffic control and medical support for a single van rollover accident on US285 south of Lamy on Friday February 28. No one was seriously injured. Traffic was reduced to one lane while the investigation occured and until the vehicle could be towed away.

Fireplace Ashes- Don’t Let this Happen to You!

Every year, hundreds of houses are damaged or destroyed and lives are disrupted or lost because of the improper disposal of fireplace ashes.The attached pictures are from a fire in another city caused by ashes left in the garage and thought to be out, but the same thing can happen here in El Dorado if you do not follow safe ash disposal guidelines.

1. Fireplace ashes can remain dangerous for 2 or 3 days after the fire is thought to be "out".

2. Place the ashes in a METAL BUCKET, NOT a plastic bucket, NOT a cardboard box, NOT a paper sack.

3. Remove them from the house and douse with water.

4. Do not pour the ashes into a garden area or under trees.

5. Test the ashes with your hands to be sure they are cold and "dead out". If in doubt, use more water and wait a few more days.

6. Then dispose of them.

7. If your fireplace has a clean out hole, it is OK to push the ashes down thru this hole after the fireplace has been unused for 3 days.

Don’t be a victim of something you have full control over!

One more thing: Open the Flue before lighting your fireplace. Check it. Do not assume it is open.

Motor Vehicle Accident - Moya Road - Click this title to see more on this event

El Dorado Fire and Rescue responded to a one-car MVA on Moya Road. A truck veered off of Ave Vista Grande, crossed over to the back yard of a house on Moya Road, penetrated a stucco wall and stopped when it hit the back wall of the house. The driver suffered minor injuries and was transported by EFRS to St. Vincents. No one else was injured in the accident.

In an effort to make children feel comfortable and not be scared of firemen and women in their fire suits, and to promote fire safety in the home, 100 of Eldorado Elementary School’s Kindergartners paid a visit to the Eldorado Fire and Rescue Station 1 on November 5. They participated in discussions and demonstrations of fireman personal protective equipment, Stop-Drop-Roll, how to establish a meeting place, and they practiced telling their address to 911 operators. They also witnessed demonstrations of the EFRS fire and ambulance apparatus including hose and water cannon demonstrations. Pictures of this event are shown below . Click each image to enlarge it.

Pre-kindergarten Children Visit EFRS (click this title to see more)

A group of about 20 Pre-K children visited the EFRS Station 1 on October 23. They were treated to demos of firefighter equipment such as the Med 3 medical unit and Engine 5, and they got to see up close what a firefighter looks and sounds like when he/she has donned their protective equipment. The highlight of this educational field trip occured when the kids witnessed a demo of hose technique (aka squirting water) and they also were allowed to climb around on the equipment.
