What Do I Do In An Emergency?

In any police, fire or medical emergency dial 9-1-1 from your home or cell phone. If you need the El Dorado Fire Department to respond to your location, call 9-1-1. Your 9-1-1 call will be connected to the Santa Fe Regional Emergency Communications Center. Be prepared to give your address, phone number and specific details on your emergency to the 9-1-1 operator. Do not hang up until told to do so. The 9-1-1 operator will ask you a series of questions about your emergency. Answer the questions as accurately and concisely as possible. Responding to the 9-1-1 operator’s questions does not delay response to your emergency and insures the appropriate resources are dispatched to handle your call. Follow the 9-1-1 operator’s instructions as they are trained to assist you until emergency responders arrive. In medical emergencies, the 9-1-1 operator will ask additional questions and may provide you with further instructions to aid the patient prior to the arrival of emergency medical services. Turn on outside lights at night and be prepared to meet emergency responders when they arrive at your location.

How is the El Dorado Fire Department Notified of an Emergency?

The El Dorado Fire and Rescue Service is a part of the Santa Fe County 9-1-1 system and is dispatched by the Santa Fe Regional Emergency Communications Center (SFRECC). Once SFRECC has determined that your call is reporting an emergency in the El Dorado Fire District a page is sent to all members of the El Dorado Fire Department. El Dorado fire personnel carry special pagers that sound a tone (or vibrate) which is followed by a voice dispatch giving the type of call and its location. The fire department has specific protocols on how members are to respond and what fire equipment is due to different types of emergencies. On all structure fires in El Dorado surrounding fire departments from the Hondo, Galisteo and Glorietta Fire Departments are also paged. Why doesn’t the fire department grade the roads or plow snow with the equipment that is sometimes at the main station?

The road grading equipment is owned by the County of Santa Fe and is sometimes parked at the main fire station on Avenida Vista Grande.  The equipment has now been moved to a fire station located in the Hondo Fire District at U.S. Route 285 and Old Las Vegas Highway.  The fire department does not grade roads or plow snow.
