El Dorado Fire and Rescue Service’s (EFRS) newest vehicle is a type 3 wildland engine being built by S&S Fire Apparatus Company in Fairmont, Indiana (http://ssfire.com/). This vehicle will carry the call sign of “Engine 731” and will be housed at EFRS Station 3 on Route 285.
Recently, the motor failed on EFRS’ old type 3 wildland engine and because that vehicle was from the mid 1970’s, EFRS elected to replace it with a new apparatus. Engine 731 is a 2008 International 7400, 4×4 (4 wheel drive) with automatic transmission. It seats up to six firefighters, carries 850 gallons of water and two pumps; one Hale 500 gallon per minute (GPM) and one Waterous 225 GPM for pump and roll operations.
Engine 731 is classified as a “heavy wildland engine” designed for all kinds of wildland fire operations, including structure protection. When delivered it will be the only type 3 wildland engine in Santa Fe County. Delivery is expected in late July of 2008. Pictures of the chassis taken on June 4, 2008, are shown above and will be updated as building of the engine progresses.
